Shared Resource Declaring Independence
Although they are no longer referred to as colonies, there are 17 non-self-governing territories in the world today which are governed by outside countries. America rules over three such places. In this Authentic Learning Unit, students explore the concept of decolonization as described by the United Nations. They learn the history of America's struggle for independence. Using their knowledge of Enlightenment philosophy and the actions of America's Founding Fathers, students will hold a debate in which they present and argue for a solution to colonization in the world today. Finally, they are challenged with sharing this knowledge with government representatives.
